Hive Security

Wasps get desperate as the year turns, so we built a different front door.

Things are feeling a bit calmer. The colonies are growing and the supers are on.

But it's time to start planning for the future, and this part isn't pleasant. Once the weather starts to change, the wasps get more desperate for food and hives become a prime target.

Following several online resources, I started to build underfloor entrances, adding a few adaptations of my own (at least, I haven't seen them elsewhere).

On the workbench.

An extra entrance at the start, with a low tunnel behind it, adds two extra layers of defence. Wasps are visual hunters that attack in flight, and this change takes away the light and the height they need, which gives the bees the advantage.

Ready to go.

It took the bees a couple of hours to get used to it, but once they learnt their way in, they seemed as happy as a bee.

Only time will tell, but we are feeling confident about the changes.
