The hives
Three hives for now, in a field in Lauderdale.
Hive 1
Where it all started.
Hive 2
Came along in our first year.
Hive 3
The third, and the reason for the name.
About our hives
We currently use Smith hives, a design local to the Scottish Borders. That may change next year, but for now our bees seem happy in their homes.
Our hives sit in a sheltered spot with plenty of summer sun. As winter approaches, we’re putting in wind guards and new stands to give the colonies the best chance of getting through our cold, damp winters.
Where this is going
We aim to grow from three hives to eight next year. The harvest will still be small, and that is part of the point.
As we continue to learn, we’ll keep adapting our setup to give our bees the best. Hopefully in a few years we’ll have more than one apiary, but that’s a challenge for another day.
